Giving Back “Contactless”

Ever since I was young, I have always volunteered and provided my time to the community. It has something my parents instilled into me as that we should always provide people who may not have, what we have. Growing up we did many projects like volunteering at soup kitchens, making meals for the homeless, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, trash pickup, landscaping projects, and so many other community service projects.

I continued to volunteer thorough the years at hospitals, charity drives, worship centers, and community drives. It allows to share my time and show these people I care and if they need anything, I am there for them. It is very hard sometimes to see these people not have food or even the basic necessities in their homes.

During this pandemic, volunteer efforts became harder to come by because a lot of the activities I did were in person. My wife and I found an organization called Kids Meal. This organization helps deliver lunches to children ages five years-old and under facing debilitating hunger due to extreme poverty.

We talked to Kids Meal and asked what is required in each lunch bag to be healthy and how we could help. They gave us a list of items they needed in each bag to make it healthy and nutritious. We found the items online and shipped it to our house. We decorated the bags with messages of encouragement. Each bag contained a drink, snack, a form protein, a carb/starch, something sweet, and salty. Every month, we have been packing roughly 500 lunches for these kids. We call the Kids Meal service to come to our house and we load the lunches into their van. The Kids Meal van goes out to deliver these lunches to those need them.

This is something anyone can do without leaving their home. We have had a lot of people in our family and neighborhood helping out. We could not do this without their help as well. I hope you stay well and find your heart, to do your part during these difficult times.
