Robots and Technology Advancements

Recently, I watched a few Netflix sci-fi series and was reminded how Robotic technology is going to change the world. The two shows I watched were Better Than Us, which deals with an empathic bot that cares for a family and the other was Another Life, which is an interstellar mission into track down the source of a massive alien artifact landing on the Earth. Both of these shows use robots and artificial intelligence in different ways. It marvels me science will be there one day. When people think of robots, they think of something that does something and makes it easier for humans. Now with advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence, this is all changing.

They are various kinds of the robots that are being developed and advanced. What is interesting for each of these is how it replaces the human element.

Pre-programmed robots operate in a controlled environment where they do simple, repetitious tasks. The robot’s task is to do it faster and more efficiently than a human.

Humanoid robots are robots that look like and/or impersonator human behavior. These robots are being used in the service industry, research and space exploration, personal assistance and caregiving, education and entertainment, search and rescue, manufacturing and maintenance, public relations, and healthcare. These robots will be the ones you will see more often.

Autonomous robots operate freely with human interaction. These robots do tasks in an open environment that do not require human supervision. Think of your automatic vacuum cleaners.

Teleoperated robots are mechanical bots controlled by humans. These robots usually work in extreme geographical conditions, weather, circumstances, etc.

As you can see, they are many kinds of robots, I did not cover them all. They are so many uses for robots. They will make life simpler for humans in many ways. However, does that mean our jobs are at risk? Some jobs may be taken away by these robots, but you will always need a human to program and teach these robots these tasks. With AI, these robots will learn to communicate with humans more effectively.

Will these robots start having feelings and learn to turn on humans like they have in movies and TV shows? Will robots help us discover new advancements in the medical industry? So many questions remained unanswered, but with AI and robots together, I feel there is a world of possibilities.

It is not all about the nuts and bolts!
