The New Way

In the last six months, have you attended a virtual wedding? Virtual Funeral? Virtual Concert? Virtual Job Fair? Virtual Meeting? Zoom Call? Virtual Video Interview? The list goes on forever. People who did not even know a single aspect of this virtual telecommunication have now learned this new technology and said this has provided them the element that was missing in their lives. Growing up our parents never got to see their parents every day, every weekend, not alone every year. To get a ticket to travel across the globe and spend some 3–4 months with them was always necessary. Now with this technology they can call and video call anyone at any time.

My parents and I, video call every day so they can see my son. This allows them to see him because we are not travelling yet. It allows them to see how is growing, show them the things we have taught him. This past week, we had some rain, so I showed them him playing in the rain. It is just these little things, that help people have the experience they would not otherwise.

It is also unfortunate a lot of gatherings would bring families together to share memories is becoming harder. People are coming up with ways to embrace the technology to still have these events and share these moments with loved ones. Personally, I feel that when I attend these events virtually, I do not feel all that there and do not feel connected fully. All my meetings at work, I turn on my camera to make sure people see my face and my reactions. I make sure they know I am there and listening.

These video calls and virtual events are great way to connect to everyone around the world. Be mindful that everyone has a different take on how they feel about this. It will become a new normal for lots of companies and events. We need to learn to embrace this technology as a way to stay connected and engaged. Next time you are on one of these video calls, make sure you represent yourself like you were physically there. Give your 100% attention and smile!
